What is Copywriting?
Copywriting explained simply
Imagine two posters for a lost cat. The first says: “Lost cat”. The second says: “Have you seen Milo? Ginger cat, very cuddly, lost near the park. His family is looking for him. Call us.” Which one makes you take out your phone?
The second speaks to you, gives you a precise image and tells you exactly what to do. That is copywriting.
Copywriting means writing to make people act, not to sound pretty. The text talks about the reader rather than the brand. It answers a simple question: why would this person do something now?
Don’t confuse it with copyright, which refers to legal rights over a creative work. Copywriting is the job of the person who writes sales text.
A concrete example
Imagine that Julien gives guitar lessons online. His first ad says:
“Passionate guitar teacher. Online lessons for all levels. Contact me.”
It talks about him, stays vague and doesn’t explain what the reader gains. Julien rewrites it with the AIDA method: Attention, Interest, Desire, Action.
- 1Attention
“Has your guitar been gathering dust for years?”
- 2Interest
“Tutorials go too fast, you get stuck on the same chords, and you end up giving up.”
- 3Desire
“In 4 weeks, with 15 minutes a day, you play your first full song, at your own pace.”
- 4Action
“Book your free trial lesson: the link is right below.”
The new version talks about the reader, names their problem, shows a precise result and ends with one single action. Same teacher, same price: only the text has changed.
Look at the words too. The first version talks about the teacher and says “contact me”. The second says “you” in almost every line. The reader feels that someone is speaking to them.
Why it matters to you
- You sell more with the same visitors. A better-written page or ad turns more visitors into customers, without spending more.
- You are no longer afraid of the blank page. With a structure like AIDA, you fill in 4 boxes instead of waiting for inspiration.
- Your ads work better. On social media, the first sentence often decides if someone stops or keeps scrolling.
Copywriting is useful everywhere: the headline of your home page, a product description, an email subject line, ad text, your account bio. Whenever a text must make people act, that is copywriting.
How to use it
- Know your reader. Reread your persona and your value proposition. Write down their main problem in their own words.
- Write the Attention. A first sentence that makes them stop: a question, a problem, a strong image. This is your hook.
- Write the Interest. Show that you understand their situation. Describe what they are going through, not what you sell.
- Write the Desire. Describe the result they get. Prefer benefits (“you play your first song”) to features (“video lessons”).
- Write the Action. One clear action, with a verb: book, try, write to me. This is your call to action.
Then read it out loud. Cut every useless word. Replace “we” and “I” with “you” wherever you can.
Finally, check your promise. Julien asks himself if his current students really play a song in 4 weeks, with 15 minutes a day. If that is not true for most of them, he changes these numbers. A text that promises too much attracts customers, then disappoints them.
Here is a tip for features: after each one, ask yourself “so what does this mean for my customer?” “Video lessons” becomes “you learn from your sofa, with no travel”.
Common mistakes
- ❌ Talking about yourself (“passionate, qualified, here for you”). → ✅ Talk about the reader and their result.
- ❌ Listing features. → ✅ Turn each one into a benefit: “so what does this mean for you?”
- ❌ Offering several actions in the same text. → ✅ One action only, clear and visible.
- ❌ Writing in a complicated way to look serious. → ✅ Short sentences, simple words, your customer’s words.
- ❌ Inventing urgency or a promise. → ✅ Tell the truth. Trust sells over time.
With AI
Copy this prompt into your AI assistant:
You are a copywriter. Write sales copy using the AIDA method.
My offer: [product or service].
My ideal customer: [persona].
Their problem, in their words: [sentences from messages or reviews].
The real result my customers get: [result].
The channel: [Instagram ad, email, sales page...].
The action I want: [book, buy, write to me...].
1. Write 3 different versions, speaking directly to the reader as "you".
2. For each version, clearly separate Attention, Interest, Desire, Action.
3. Short sentences, simple words, no false urgency.
4. Point out any promise I should be able to prove.
AI writes a first draft in a few seconds. Your customers’ exact words and the truth of your promise have to come from you.
FAQ
What is the difference between copywriting and content writing?
Content writing often aims to inform and to be found on Google. Copywriting aims for one specific action: buy, sign up, book. The two often meet on the same page.
What is the AIDA method?
It is a 4-step structure: Attention (hook the reader), Interest (show the topic concerns them), Desire (make them want the result) and Action (say what to do). It works for an ad, an email or a sales page.
Do I need to be a good writer to do copywriting?
No. Copywriting mostly requires knowing your customer well. Simple sentences, in their own words, convince better than a beautiful style.
Is copywriting manipulation?
No, as long as you tell the truth. Good copywriting highlights a real benefit for the right person. Lying or creating false urgency is something else, and it destroys trust.
What is the difference between copywriting and copyright?
They are two unrelated things. Copywriting is a writing technique that makes people act. Copyright refers to the legal rights that protect a creative work.
