What is Prompt?
Prompts explained simply
Imagine you order a pizza by phone. If you just say “a pizza”, you could get anything. If you say “a large margherita, no olives, well done, delivered at 8 pm”, you get what you want.
A prompt is your order to the AI. It is the text you type in the chat box of an assistant like ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.
AI does not read your mind. It only works with what you give it. A vague request gets an average answer. A precise request gets a useful answer.
A concrete example
Let’s imagine Leïla runs a neighborhood hair salon. She wants an Instagram post to present her new service: a deep treatment for curly hair, at $45.
Before, she writes: “Write an Instagram post.”
The AI produces an ordinary text about “the beauty of hair”, full of emojis, that could come from any salon. It doesn’t even mention the treatment.
After, she uses the 5-element formula.
Role: community manager · Context: neighborhood salon, curly hair treatment at $45 · Task: one post · Format: 80 words, 3 hashtags · Example: an old post people liked
Here is her new prompt:
You are the community manager for a neighborhood hair salon.
Context: I am launching a deep treatment for curly hair, at $45.
My customers are 25-40 years old and complain about dry curls with no definition.
Task: write an Instagram post to present this treatment.
Format: 80 words maximum, a warm and simple tone, 3 hashtags at the end.
Example of an old post that worked well: [paste the post].
This time, the text talks about dry curls, the $45 price and the neighborhood. It sounds like Leïla. She changes two words and publishes.
The “after” prompt is longer, but Leïla keeps it. Next time, she will only change the service and the price.
Why it matters to you
- You get useful answers on the first try. Less back and forth, fewer texts to throw away.
- You save time every week. A good prompt can be reused. You change two or three words and start again.
- Your content sounds like you. With your context and your examples, the AI moves away from generic texts.
The prompt is the basic skill for all work with generative AI. Tools change quickly. The way to phrase a request well stays the same.
How to use it: the 5-element formula
- Role: tell the AI who it should be. “You are a web copywriter”, “You are a customer adviser”.
- Context: your business, your customer, your product, your goal. This is the element people forget most often.
- Task: what you want, with a clear verb. “Write”, “Summarize”, “Compare”, “Suggest 5 ideas”.
- Format: the length, the tone, the structure. “80 words”, “as a list”, “a table with 3 columns”.
- Example: a text you like, to show the style you expect. Optional, but very effective.
Then continue the conversation. Ask for “shorter”, “more direct”, “3 more versions”. The first result is only a starting point.
Also add what you don’t want: “no emojis”, “don’t invent any numbers”, “no jargon”. These limits prevent many errors.
Not sure what context to give? End your prompt with: “Before you answer, ask me the questions you need.” The AI asks for what it is missing: your customer, your price, your tone. You answer, then it writes. This is the simplest method when you are starting out.
Finally, keep your best prompts in a document. Replace the details with brackets, like [service] or [price]. This way, you build your own toolbox that you can reuse every week.
Common mistakes
- ❌ Writing a 3-word request. → ✅ Give the context and the format, so the AI guesses less.
- ❌ Putting everything into one giant request. → ✅ Break it into steps: ideas first, text next.
- ❌ Accepting the first answer. → ✅ Ask for adjustments in the same conversation.
- ❌ Forgetting to say what you don’t want. → ✅ Add your limits: length, tone, banned words.
- ❌ Believing a prompt makes the answer true. → ✅ Even with an excellent prompt, check the facts.
With AI
This prompt helps you improve your own prompts:
Here is a prompt I use: "[paste your prompt]".
My goal: [what I want to get].
1. Check if it contains a role, context, a task, a format and an example.
2. Tell me what is missing or vague.
3. Rewrite an improved version, with [variables] in brackets that I can replace.
4. Suggest a short version for days when I am in a hurry.
AI improves your wording in a few seconds. The context of your business and the final choice of text must come from you.
FAQ
How do I write a good prompt?
Tell the AI who it should be, give it the context, explain the task, specify the format you expect and show an example if you have one. The more useful information you give, the less the AI has to guess.
Do I have to write my prompts in English?
No. The major AI assistants understand many languages very well. Write in the language you want the answer in.
Why doesn't the AI do what I ask?
Often because the prompt is too vague or lacks context. Say what you want, what you don't want and the format. You can also correct it by continuing the conversation: "shorter", "less formal".
What is prompt engineering?
It is the art of designing and improving prompts to get reliable answers. For marketing use, you don't need to be an engineer: a simple formula and a few tries are enough.
