What is Meta Ads?
Meta Ads explained simply
Imagine a huge shopping mall where millions of people walk through every day. Meta Ads is the service that rents you billboards in this mall. You choose who sees your billboard, how much you pay and what it says.
The mall is Meta’s apps: Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. You create your ads once, then Meta shows them where they have the best chance of working.
Everything happens in a free tool called Ads Manager. You pay only for showing your ads.
Each campaign is organized like a box with three levels. If you understand these three levels, you understand Meta Ads.
A concrete example
Imagine that Rania runs an online clothing store. She sells a dress at $50 and earns $20 of gross margin per dress. She delivers with cash on delivery: the customer pays when the package arrives.
She prepares her first campaign:
- 1Campaign: the objective
Rania chooses the Sales objective. She tells Meta: find me buyers, not people who are just curious.
- 2Ad set: who and how much
Women aged 25 to 40 in her country, $10 a day. One audience, one budget.
- 3Ad: what people see
A 15-second video of a customer wearing the dress, short text and a button to the store.
Before launching, Rania calculates the most she can pay for a sale. Out of 10 orders, she knows that 7 or 8 are confirmed by phone (75%). And 8 packages out of 10 are really paid for on delivery (80%).
Her Break Even CPA is the cost per sale above which she loses money: $20 × 75% × 80% = $12.
After 7 days, she has spent $70 and collected payment for 7 dresses delivered. Her cost per delivered sale: $70 ÷ 7 = $10. That is under $12: she makes money and can continue.
Why it matters to you
- You go where your clients are. Your clients probably open Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp every day.
- You choose precisely who sees you. Age, area, interests, or people who have already visited your website.
- You test fast and cheaply. With $10 a day, you know within a week if an ad idea deserves more budget.
Meta Ads is also a tool where you can burn your budget very fast. A campaign launched with no calculation and no method spends your money whether you sell or not. That is why you need the method below.
How to use it: the Coodi method
- Calculate your Break Even CPA before anything else. Gross margin × confirmation rate × delivery rate. If you get paid online, simply keep your gross margin. This is your limit.
- Install the Meta Pixel. This small piece of code tells Meta who buys. Golden rule: the Purchase event fires only when payment is confirmed, never when a form is submitted.
- Choose the Sales objective. Meta gives you what you ask for. If you ask for clicks, you get people who click.
- Test in ABO. One campaign, a fixed budget per ad set. One ad set = one concept (Angle × Offer × Persona), with 3 ads maximum.
- Decide in the right order. First the cost per delivered sale, then the comparison with your Break Even, and finally the video numbers to understand why. When a concept wins, you scale it in CBO.
For Rania: she tests 3 concepts at $10 a day each. The one that costs her $10 per delivered sale stays: it is under her $12 limit. The ones above $12 are cut. The winner then receives the whole budget.
What is true today (verified in November 2026). There are six campaign objectives: Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App promotion and Sales. The budget that Meta manages at campaign level is called Advantage campaign budget, formerly CBO. In addition to the Pixel, Meta offers the Conversions API, which sends sales from your server or your order tool. Names change often, but the principle stays.
Common mistakes
- ❌ Boosting a post to sell. → ✅ Create a real Sales campaign in Ads Manager.
- ❌ Counting an order as a sale. → ✅ Count only paid sales, and set up the Pixel the same way.
- ❌ Putting 10 ads in the same ad set. → ✅ 3 ads maximum per ad set, one concept per ad set.
- ❌ Cutting an ad because the video has a poor click-through rate. → ✅ Look first at the cost per delivered sale and your Break Even.
- ❌ Changing the ad every day. → ✅ Let a test run for 5 to 7 days before you decide.
With AI
After one week of testing, copy your numbers from Ads Manager and paste them into this prompt:
I sell [product] at $[price]. My gross margin is $[margin].
Confirmation rate: [X]%. Delivery rate: [Y]%.
Here are the results of my ad sets over [number] days:
[paste: ad set name, spend, delivered sales, click-through rate, watch time]
1. Calculate my Break Even CPA.
2. Calculate the cost per delivered sale of each ad set.
3. Sort them: cut, keep, scale.
4. For the ones to cut, use the video numbers to suggest a hypothesis.
AI does the math and the sorting in a minute. Finding the ad idea that speaks to your client is your job, and it comes from knowing them.
FAQ
What is the difference between Meta Ads and Facebook Ads?
They are the same thing. Facebook Ads is the old name. Since the company became Meta, people say Meta Ads, because one campaign can run on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp.
How much does an ad on Meta Ads cost?
You set your own budget, even just a few dollars a day. The real number to track is what one truly paid sale costs you, compared with what you can afford to pay.
Is boosting a post the same as using Meta Ads?
Boosting is a simplified version, launched from your page. Ads Manager gives you much more control: objective, audience, budget, tests of several ads. To sell, use Ads Manager.
How long does it take to see if a Meta ad works?
Let a test run for several days, often 5 to 7, before you decide. One day is not enough: results vary too much from one day to the next.
Do I need a website to advertise on Meta?
No, you can send people to a form, Messenger or WhatsApp. But to sell online and measure your sales, a website with the Meta Pixel installed helps you a lot.
